Central Greece (Greek: Periféreia Stereás Elládas, also known as "Mainland Greece") is one of the thirteen administrative regions of the Mediterranean country. Not to be mistaken with the geographical region of Central Greece, which embodies the modern administrative regions of Central Greece and Attica, and the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania in West Greece. The administrative region of Central Greece occupies half of the traditional region of Central Greece, situated to the north of Attica and the Peloponnese, to the east of West Greece and to the south of Thessaly and Epirus. The most populous region of Greece, with a population of 4,591,568 people and the main cities found in this regions are Lamia, Agrinio, Chalkida, Thebes and Livadeia.
Its shores are watered by the Aegean Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the west and the Corinthian Gulf to the south. The region’s climate is temperate along its coastlines and dry in the interior. The impressive city of Lamia, which dates back to antiquity, is believed to be named after the mythological figure of Lamia, the daughter of Poseidon, and queen of the Trachineans. Here you may journey back in time whilst visiting Lamia Castle, the city's fortified acropolis. Platia Eleftherias (Freedom Square) - site of the towns independence day parade, and main cathedral, with its many cafes with outdoor seating is another valuable landmark. You may also stroll through Platia Diakou (Diakos Square), containing the statue of Athanasios Diakos, Platia Parkou (Park Square) or Platia Laou (People's Square) and admire the statue of Aris Velouchiotis.
Agrinio, the largest city and municipality of the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit of Greece, embodies valuable landmarks such as The Archaeological Museum of Agrinion, The neoclassical buildings of the tobacco storehouses Papastratos and Papapetrou, which date from the early 20th century, The Papastrateio Municipal Park, The Papastratios Municipal Library or The Dimokratias Square, the main square of the city. A trip to lakes Trichonida and Lysimachia is a must, where you can be amazed by the remains of the Church of the Holy Trinity of Mavrika (8th-9th century), situated at the banks of lake Lysimachia.
Chalcis or Chalkida is the chief town of the island of Euboea in Greece, is situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point. The most intriguing building in Chalcis is the church of Saint Paraskevi (the patron saint of the island), the only early Dominican church to retain its original form until the present. The central arch over the iconostasis and the ceiling and walls of the south chapel are the best examples of Italian Gothic stone-carving in Greece.
Thebes, a lovely city located in Boeotia, central Greece. Tourism in the area is based mainly in Thebes and the surrounding villages, where a lot of places of interest related to antiquity exist such as the battlefield where the Battle of Plataea took place.
Livadeia, the capital of the regional unit Boeotia, located 130 kilometres NorthWest of Athens is set in a mountainous area, with farmlands in valley areas. Home to the Levadiakos FC, a great team in the Super League Greece, a must-see destination to all sports enthusiasts.
Here, in Central Greece, guests can be dazzled by the traditional Roumelian dances, with their slow and controlled characteristic. Let the music flow through you through the sound of the clarinet, the most beloved instrument in this region and take part in tsamikos (in which the leader performs energetic leaps) and kleftiko, the main dances of this region.
