Lefkada, or Leucas or Leucadia or Lefkas or Leukas (Greek: Λευκάδα [lefˈkaða]; Ancient Greek and Katharevousa: Λευκάς), is located in the Ionian Sea. It lies between the islands of Corfu and Kefalonia. It is very close to the shores of the western mainland of Greece. The island is connected to the mainland by a long causeway and a floating bridge.
Archaeological evidence points to that Lefkas has been inhabited since the Stone Age (4th Millennium BC). According to mythology, the island was given by Odysseus father to Penelopes father as a wedding gift. The cliffs of the island were a "favourite" suicide spot for people with broken hearts, and some legends claim that it was here, and not on Lesbos, that Sappho jumped to her death after her love for a sailor had not been returned
It is a very popular summer region, where there is something for everyone. Young visitors party all night, windsurfers have some excellent spots, there are quiet places for those who just want to relax, and there is lots to see. Considered as the Caribbean of Greece, Lefkada island amazes visitors with the exotic blue colour of its beaches. This is the perfect island for families, couples and large groups of friends, as it has something for everyone.
Renowned for its amazing shoreline as well as some of the most famous beaches in the world, such as the beach of Porto Katsiki where the emerald waters of the sea gently sweep the pristine white sand, the island of Lefkada is a beach haven of tranquility. Beaches, like Porto Katsiki, Kathisma and Egremni, are among the most photographed places in Greece. Lefkada also has lovely seaside villages, like Sivota, Agios Nikitas and Vassiliki.
The town of Lefkas is the gate of the island. The historical centre of Lefkas town is graphic and beautiful with coloured wooden houses and narrow stone paths. Walking through the pedestrian zone of the Lefkas Market can be very pleasant because of the numerous shops and cafes. There is a great number of restaurants in Lefkada Town and other island’s villages like Poros, Nidri or Ligia where visitors can have tasty and fresh seafood specialties as well as numerous homemade traditional meals, salads and sweets.
