It is consisting of the northeastern parts of the country, comprising the eastern part of the region of Greek Macedonia along with the region of Thrace, and the islands of Thasos and Samothrace.

Thasos or Thassos is the northernmost Greek island, and 12th largest by area, blooming with its mountainous terrain, rising gradually from coast to centre, towards its highest peak Ypsario( Ipsario) at 1,205 metres. The town of Thasos, an important part of the isle, is also known as Limenas Thasou, "Harbour of Thasos", in an effort to distinguish the town from the island on which it is situated. The current town was built west from the ancient town. In and around Thasos, there are many ruins dating from antiquity, most of the finds from archeological sites being on display at the Archaeological Museum of Thasos.
