Karavotsai Marina is located in Folegandros Island.
Be lured in by the scent of life, as you approach the shores of Folegandros, an island of untouched beauty in the Cyclades, located close to the islands of Santorini and Milos. Here you will be enchanted by the authentic, hospitable air of the locals, and bask in a total unwinding atmosphere. According to Greek mythology, the island of Folegandros was originally inhabited by shepherds from West Greece, in their search for lush pastures. Some time later, Minoan Cretans came here, led by the son of Minos, Folegandros, after who the island was named.
One of the oldest medieval towns in the cluster of Cyclades, as well as the biggest settlement of the island is Chora Village, located 4 km from the port of Karavostasi, 200 metres above the sea level. With traditional architecture, whitewashed and well maintained little houses, meandering streets and alleys, the village enchants its guests with an unique serene air, providing them shaded areas by the lush trees. One can find many squares, a distinct trait of Folegandros and the Cyclades islands, beautifully decorated with inviting taverns.
The most scenic quarter of Chora is considered to be Kastro, the medieval part, which used to be protected by strong castle walls, which unfortunately haven’t stood the test of time, causing the village to spread around them. In the close proximity to Chora, on the way north, lies Chrissospilia, dazzling those who arrive here with the stalactite cave, which is well protected by the Archaeological Service.
Located on a gorgeous spot above the Chora is The Church of Panagia, considered the most famous one in Folegrandros island. A fifteen minute walk over a stone zigzag path from Pounda Square, Chora will take you to this celebrated church, offering spectacular views over the village. Dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary, it was built on the ruins of an ancient temple and marble parts of this temple were used as construction material for the place of worship, which guests can admire among the ancient inscriptions and bases of statues within its walls. With whitewashed exterior and traditional Cycladic architecture, the church is blessed with many domes and a tall bell-tower. Residing within the basilica is the silver icon of Virgin Mary, thought to be miraculous as the desperate prayers of locals were heard in 1790 and a strong northern wind sank all the pirate boats, threatening to destroy their life. Since that time, Virgin Mary is considered the protector of the island and held in high esteem by Folegandros inhabitants.
Folegandros shorelines are celebrated for their tranquil surroundings, the breathtaking views and the lush landscape. Remaining true to its authentic character, this feature of Folegandros reflects upon the beaches as well, most of which being untouched and secluded, ideal for rejuvenation. Among the best beaches on the island are Agali, a gorgeous long stretch of golden sand and clear waters located 5 km west of town, Karavostasi beach, a pebbly natural beauty with sandy sea bottom and Agios Georgios, found 8 km north-west of town and protecting its guests with cooling shade from tamarisks.
With arid landscape, relaxing beaches and traditional architecture, Folegandros offers an ideal tranquil environment for summer holidays, welcoming you and your loved ones for a splendid time.
