Limin Mandraki is located in Nisyros Island.
Nisyros (Greek: Νίσυρος) is a volcanic Greek island situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos with an approximately round shape. Nisyros is one of the most beautiful Aegean islands, still untouched by the tourism growth.
This charming island offers a perfect spot for tranquility and seclusion. It can be reached by ferry from Piraeus, Kos and Rhodes. Nisyros island is generally celebrated for its still dynamic spring of gushing lava that is found in the core of the island, the youngest volcano in Greece. Mandraki and Nikia are the most scenic towns in Nisyros Greece, with enchanting local architecture and extraordinary perspectives.
As per Greek mythology, the island was established when Poseidon cut off a piece of Kos and tossed it onto the giant Polybotes to prevent him from fleeing, as such the ancient name of the Nisyros island was Porphyris. Archaic walls, dating from the fifth century BC, part of the acropolis of the island, are found close Mandraki, casting a bygone air upon it. The most important landmark in Nisyros island is certainly the volcano, located in the center of the island, found close to Nikia village. This is the youngest volcano in Greece, only 160,000 years old, and still remains active, among other active volcanoes in the mythical country, such as Santorini, Milos and Methana.
The Venetian Castle, also known as the Castle of Panagia Spiliani, most likely built in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John, is another attraction on the island of Nisyros. The citadel gives passers-by a splendid view of the island. Here you may indulge in a beloved, traditional product of Nisyros - soumada, a non-alcoholic almond-flavoured beverage and take part in the charming, local festivities during the summer.
On 21st of June the village celebrates Agios Nikitas, the saint protector of the island. The biggest festivity though takes place at the monastery of Panagia Spialiani (Blessed Virgin Mary of the cave), built beside the medieval castle raised by the Knights Hospitaller who prevailed over the island in 1315. However, the island is blessed with many other Orthodox Christian churches, as well as four monasteries which are not inhabited by monks today. On that particular June day, the port of Mandraki is pretty crowded with a great number of visitors arriving from the neighboring islands.
The shorelines are clean and due to the restricted number of guests they are blessed with an unwinding environment. The island is most commonly explored in form of a one day trip from Kos. Additionally, holidays in Nisyos might be effectively joined together with different islands of Dodecanese, as there is a daily ferry in summer, ready to transport you along these magical locations. Most popular beaches on the island include Pali and Lies Beach. Pali (or Paloi) beach is a long stretch of sand, sprinkled with dark pebbles, located only 4 km east of the village. It is popular with locals and tourists but rarely crowded and its sand slopes into the water quite smoothly, making it an ideal playing spot for youngsters. A long tuft of trees covers the coast which runs almost to the end of the beach, blessing it with cooling shade.
Lies beach, found east of Mandraki, the capital of Nisyros, spreads for more than 1 kilometer and consists of little coves formed by the sea over the years. This beach is entirely sun-soaked, as there is no natural shade but near its end, guests can discover a small tavern, serving delicious freshly caught fish.
