Vathi Marina is located in Kalymnos Island.
Kalymnos is located between Kos and Leros in the south-eastern Aegean Sea and belongs to the Dodecanese Islands prefecture, being the fourth largest island among the Dodecanese. This island is recognized for the wild rough mountains, which is the reason it has morphed into a rock climbing destination throughout the most recent years. Even more, each September, it hosts the International Climbing Festival, attracting tourists from all parts of the world.
In the past, the locals used to make their living from sponge fishing. Despite the fact that this mean of livelihood has declined today, there are numerous sponge sellers at the beachfront of Pothia, the capital of the island. Nowadays, only one sponge factory remains at the capital of the island, to ensure that locals and guests not forget about this tradition. This factory is open to visit to get informed on the history of sponge-fishing, the methods used to dive, the process of elaborating sponges and to observe from close range workers elaborate sponges today. Apart from climbing, hiking is also an agreeable, blood-pumping activity within the island. Hiking trails are in fact old pathways that cross the island and lead to old castles, mountainous villages, little sanctuaries and secluded shorelines.
The islet of Telendos rises across the north western coast of Kalymnos, opposite the village of Myrties. Telendos is separated from the main island by a channel just 700 metres wide. In the ancient times, Telendos was part of Kalymnos, until a massive earthquake in 535 A.D. separated it from the rest of the island. Telendos is rather a barren island. Alongside the tiny port of Telendos, usually busy with fishing boats, visitors can capture a number of taverns and cafes that serve appetizing traditional Greek food.
The beaches of Telendos, Paradise and Hoklakas beaches being the most renowned, are quaint and not organized at all, making them the ideal spot for peace lovers and naturists. The Monastery of Agios Savvas is located on a hilltop above Pothia Town, the capital of Kalymnos. This lovely church was built from stone with red tiled roof and is dedicated to Agios Savvas, the patron saint of the island. Due to its location, the landmark watches over the region, providing a breathtaking view of town, the port and the sea, while the beautiful monastery of Agioi Pantes is also located close-by.
Kalymnos is one of the most breathtaking yet unexplored islands of the Dodecanese. Some of the most appealing Kalymnos beaches are Emporio, Myrties, Kantouni and Massouri, which are organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. Other beaches in Kalymnos are totally secluded and perfect for privacy, ensuring guests the much needed tranquility in order to rejuvenate.
